  • Great question! Take a look at this through the lens of mental health. Approaching yoga in a trauma-informed manner allows the student to find greater empowerment in their own practice, their lives, and even begin to heal from past or current traumatic experiences. Using invitational language and encouraging the student to choose how and when to move their own body, the student begins to develop trust and feelings of safety in their own body and with others. The instructor will utilize sensory language that allows the students to tap into their sense and experience the present moment; which can be challenging when one has experienced trauma and finds themself in a constant state of hyperarousal or disconnect and dissociation. This approach to teaching yoga teaches the student that a health regulated nervous system is achievable and is safe to experience without fear. This approach shows the student how to take ownership of their own choices, perspective, and preferences. It teaches openness and self-love and is especially impactful during one’s healing journey.
